SOUTHERN SPHERE PLATINUM PROPRIETARY LIMITED – GOLIATH PROJECT
NOTICE OF THE APPLICATION FOR AN ENVIRONMENTAL AUHORISATION, REVIEW PERIOD FOR THE PROPOSED MINING RIGHT APPLICATION WITHIN THE FETAKGOMO TUBATSE AND MAKHUDUTHAMAGA LOCAL MUNICIPALITIES, WITHIN THE SEKHUKHUNE DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY, LIMPOPO PROVINCE
Notice is given in terms of Regulation 21 and 24 of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations, 2014, as amended, promulgated under the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No.107 of 1998) (NEMA), for the application for Environmental Authorisation (EA), for the Goliath Project (application in support of a mining right).

Applicant: Southern Sphere Platinum Proprietary Limited (“Southern Sphere”)
Purpose: All Interested and Affected Parties (I&APs) are hereby notified of the above application; availability and access to draft Scoping Report (SR). Furthermore, I&APs are afforded an opportunity to submit comments on the application and reports.
BACKGROUND TO THE PROJECT
Southern Sphere had a prospecting right over the Goliath area and now wishes to obtain a mining right. The area presents itself as a future large underground mineral resource project. The project is located approximately 16 km west-southwest of the town of Steelpoort and covers an area of approximately 7,326 hectares under the farms Mooimeijesfontein 363 KT, Boschkloof 331 KT, Het Fort 329 KT, Corndale 330KT and Landsend 364 KT.
The Goliath Project is situated approximately 7 km to the west of another of Southern Sphere’s projects, namely the Kingfisher project, which is an opencast project, planned to be mined before the development of Goliath. Underground access to the Goliath area is being planned from the Kingfisher project opencast area. No surface impacts are associated with this application.
LEGISLATIVE REQUIREMENTS
Based on environmental sensitivities the Project’s activities the following application is being undertaken:
- A Scoping in terms of the NEMA for the authorisation of listed activities contained in GNR 983 of 4 December 2014, as amended, published in terms of Sections 24(2), 24 (5), 24D, 44 and 47(A) (1)(b) of the NEMA. Listed Activities applied for include:

- GNR 984 Listing Notice 2 Activity 17 (obtaining a mining right for the Goliath area).
APPLICATION STATUS
An application for an environmental authorisation (EA) has been submitted on 20 August 2024 to the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) and accepted by the DMRE on 04 September 2024.
REGISTRATION AS AN I&AP
People have a right to be informed about activities and potential impacts that may affect them and to be afforded the opportunity to participate in and influence the decisions and outcomes of the proposed project. To register as an I&AP of this project, and / or to obtain more information or submit comments, please request a Registration Form from Shangoni and return it together with any comments to Shangoni by no later than 16 October 2024 at the details provided below.
AVAILABILITY OF THE DRAFT REPORTS
The draft SR is available to the public for review for a period of thirty (30) days, from 16 September 2024 to 16 October 2024. Hard copies of the mentioned documents are available at the Mapodile Library in Steelpoort. A register and comment sheet will accompany the hard copies at the public viewing station. Please complete the register after reviewing the reports. Alternatively, submit your comments by e-mail or fax to Shangoni (details provided below) by no later than 16 October 2024 for the draft SR. An electronic copy of the draft SR will also be posted on Shangoni’s website (www.shangoni.co.za) for public comment for the same period as stated above.
