June is National Environment Month
1 June 2022

The month of June is, in South Africa, marked as National Environmental Month. South Africa is ranked third in the world in terms of biodiversity, and is recognised for its high level of indigenousness with over 90 000 known species. While South Africa occupies approximately 2% of the worlds land mass, it is home to 10% of the worlds plant species, 7% of the reptile, bird and mammal species. Furthermore, our coastlines account for approximately 15% of the worlds marine species.
South African biodiversity is, however, greatly threatened.
The National Spatial Biodiversity Assessment (NSBA) (2004) revealed that 82% of the main river ecosystems are threatened, with 44% critically endangered, 27% endangered, and 11% vulnerable.
Sir David Attenborough once said, “It’s surely our responsibility to do everything within our power to create a planet that provides a home not just for us, but for all life on Earth.”
