Celebrating Arbor week 2023
Shangoni Management Services (Pty) Ltd celebrated Arbor week 2023 by donating some trees to a school in Soshanguve to be planted at their newly built classes for the grade 4’s. To live out our value of Stewardship, we’ve educated the children on what the purpose of plating trees are and how they should take care of the trees and the environment. Each class was given a specific tree that they will take care off and help grow into a tree that their children one day can still enjoy. We have decided to donate the Tree-wisteria / Vanwykshout as it was listed on the list of trees of the year for 2023 as the tree for promotion. The tree for promotion is a species or genus that may be less widely adapted but is not uncommon in South Africa.
WHY YOU SHOULD PLANT A TREE
Trees serve a bigger purpose than just providing us with beauty and much-needed shade. Some other more important purposes that trees have, include:
- They absorb excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and in return provide life-giving oxygen;
- They improve the quality of soil and its capacity for water retention;
- They help to reduce stress and lower heart rates; and
- They provide food and shelter to wildlife.
As we conclude Arbor week for 2023, lets reflect on what Professor Elton Trueblood once said: A man has made at least a start on discovering the meaning of human life when he plants shade trees under which he knows full well he will never sit.
