EXTENSION OF SERVICE AREA OF OPERATION: UMGENI WATER AND MHLATHUZE WATER
Title: Extension of Service Area of Operation of Umgeni Water and Mhlathuze Water to include the Entire Area of Kwa-Zulu Natal Province
Government Notice: GN 1208 in GG 39491 of 10 December 2015
Date of commencement: 10 December 2015
The national Ministry of Water and Sanitation has accelerated plans to reduce the number of water boards from 12 to nine boards across the country. As part thereof the Minister of Water and Sanitation has extended the service area of operation of Umgeni Water and Mhlathuze Water to include the entire area of the Kwa-Zulu Natal Province. These two water boards’ operations excluded several district municipalities in the northern regions of KZN that will now have to be served by the single provincial board. These new water service areas – representing more than 50% of the province’s geographical area – include the uThukela, Newcastle, Amajuba, uMzinyathi, uThungulu, Zululand and uMkhanyakude districts.
