Title: National Norms and Standards for Disposal of Waste to Landfill
Government Notice: GN R636 in GG 36784 of 23 August 2013
Effective date of ban: 23 August 2016

Regulation 5 of the National Norms and Standards for Disposal of Waste to Landfill specifies a list of prohibitions pertaining to landfill disposal of certain types of waste. Compliance time frames relevant to each type of waste are also specified. In this regard, landfill disposal of electric and electronic equipment, specifically lamps, is totally prohibited from 23 August 2016.

“So what” for my operation?
It must be ensured that, from 23 August 2016, your organisation do not dispose of any lamps on landfill sites. Should your organisation currently make use of a contractor to dispose of waste generated on site, it is recommended that you liaise with your contractor to explore alternative options to landfill disposal, pertaining to lamps (for example, recycling thereof).
