The Chief Inspector of Mines, in terms of section 49(6) read together with sections 9(2) and 9(3) of the MHSA, issued the Guideline for a Mandatory Code of Practice on Prevention of Fires in Mines, for implementation with effect from 1 October 2025.

The scope of this guideline relates to measures or procedures that should be established to prevent the occurrence of fires at a mine, which is the preferred way of managing the risks associated with fires in underground and surface operations at a mine.

This Guideline was first published on 30 September 2016, and the last revision date was on 17 April 2025. Mines are encouraged to review their current COP on the Prevention of Fires in Mines to ensure that it is aligned with this newly published Guideline.
