CONSERVATION OF AGRICULTURAL RESOURCES ACT 43 OF 1983: AMENDMENT TO REGULATIONS
Notice Title: Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act 43 of 1983 (“CARA”): Amendment to Regulations
Government Notice: GN 1737 in GG 45894 on 11 February 2022
Commencing date: 11 February 2022
The Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (“the Minister”) in terms of section 2(3) of the CARA amended Table 3 of regulation 15 of GNR 1048 of 25 May 1984, as amended (the Regulations) by the insertion of the Amaranthus Palmeri as a Category 1 declared weed.
Amaranthus palmeri is a species of edible flowering plant in the amaranth genus. It has several common names, including carelessweed, dioecious amaranth, Palmer’s amaranth, Palmer amaranth, and Palmer’s pigweed.
How to ensure compliance at my operations?
Category 1 plants may not occur on any land or inland water surface other than in biological control reserves. A land user must therefore control any category 1 plants that occur on any land or inland water surface by means of the methods prescribed in regulation 15E of GNR 1048. It is recommended that employers assess whether any amaranthus palmeri is growing on their premises and to take the necessary action to control it.
