COVID-19: INVITATION FOR COMMENTS ON MANDATORY CODE OF PRACTICE

The Chief Inspector of Mines has published a notice inviting the public to comment on the draft guidelines issued in terms of section 9(3) of the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996. The draft guidelines require employers to prepare and implement a mandatory code of practice (“COP”), to mitigate the effect of the outbreak of COVID-19 on the health and safety of employees and persons who may be directly affected by the disease at a mine. The publication of the draft guidelines is in compliance with the outcome of the recent labour court judgement that was handed down on 1 May 2020. Members of the public are invited to submit written comments on the draft guidelines to the Office of the Chief Inspector of Mines by 14 May 2020. Written comments must be forwarded via e-mail to: David.Msiza@dmre.gov.za for attention: Dr L Ndelu.
