The Minister of Employment and Labour has, under section 43(1)(a) and (b) of the OHSA published the Noise Exposure Regulations, 2024 (“NER”).
The publication also includes the Code of Practice for Audiometry. The objective of the Department of Employment and Labour’s Code of Practice for Audiometry in respect of the NER is to –
- assist employers with the development and implementation of a medical screening and medical surveillance programme;
- detect early NIHL; and
- prevent further hearing loss.
In addition, the publication further includes Explanatory Notes to the NER. The purpose of this document is to provide guidance to all employers, employees and the public alike, who are responsible for or concerned with the control and prevention of exposure to noise in the workplace.
The Noise-Induced Hearing Loss Regulations, GNR 307 of 7 March 2003, will be repealed 18-months after the date of promulgation of the NER (i.e. 6 September 2026).
