The Acting Director-General for the National Department of Human Settlements, in terms of section 11(1) and Schedule 1 of the NEMA approved the promulgation of the Fourth Edition Environmental Implementation Plan for Human Settlements 2020 – 2025.

The Department of Human Settlements is required in terms of section 11(1) of the NEMA to develop an Environmental Implementation Plan (“EIP”). The Section requires that every national department listed in Schedule 1, and exercises functions that may affect the environment, must prepare an EIP that will be revised every five years. The purpose and objectives of the EIP are to coordinate and harmonize the policies, plans, programmes, and decisions of the various national departments that exercise functions that may affect the environment.

Additionally, EIPs also seeks to:

  • give effect to the principle of co-operative government as stipulated in Chapter 3 of the Constitution of South Africa.
  • promote the protection of the environment across the country as a whole; and
  • enable the Minister to monitor the achievement, promotion, and protection of a sustainable environment
