Notice Title: National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act, 39 of 2004 (“NEMAQA”): Publication of the 9th National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report for the Republic of South Africa
Government Notice: GN 5850 in GG 52067 on 7 February 2025
Commencing date: 7 February 2025
The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, published the 9th National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report.
The National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report (“NIR”) covers the period 2000-2022 and provides estimates of the current emissions levels and trends in South Africa and will form part of the First Biennial Transparency Report to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (“UNFCCC”). South Africa is required by the UNFCCC to provide in its national inventory, on gas-by-gas basis, and its units’ mass, estimates of anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide (“CO2”), methane (“CH4”) and nitrous oxide (“N2O”), by sources and removals by sinks. An accurate, complete and updated greenhouse gas emissions inventory is a good foundation for effective mitigation responses.
