NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: AIR QUALITY ACT, 39 OF 2004: PUBLICATION OF THE 8TH NATIONAL GREENHOUSE GAS INVENTORY REPORT FOR THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA
Notice Title: National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act, 39 of 2004 (“NEMAQA”): Publication of the 8th National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report for the Republic of South Africa
Government Notice: GN 3393 in GG 48568 on 9 May 2023
Commencing date: 9 May 2023
The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, hereby publish the 8th National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report that may be accessed via the following link: 8nationalgreenhousegasreport2022.pdf (dffe.gov.za)
The National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report covers the period 2000-2020 and provides estimates of the current emissions levels and trends in South Africa and will form part of the Fifth Biennial Update
Report to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (“UNFCCC”). South Africa is required by the UNFCCC to provide in its national inventory, on gas-by-gas basis, and its units’ mass, estimates of anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), by sources and removals by sinks. An accurate, complete, and updated greenhouse gas emissions inventory is a good foundation for effective mitigation responses.
