The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (“the Minister”) in terms of section 19(2) of the NEMWA amended the list of waste management activities that have, or are likely to have, a detrimental effect on the environment published under GNR 921 of 29 November 2013, as amended (“the List”) relating to waste treatment activities in so far as it relates to the treatment of organic waste using composting and any other organic waste treatment.
In addition, the Minister, in terms of sections 7(1)(c) and 7(2)(a) of the NEMWA, determined the commencement of the National Norms and Standards for Organic Waste Composting as published under GNR 561 of 25 June 2021, as of the date of publication of the Notice i.e. 11 February 2022.
Please note that the amendments pertaining to organic waste treatment (other than composting) will only come into effect on the date of publication of the Norms and Standards for Organic Waste Treatment in the Government Gazette for implementation.
How to ensure compliance at my operations?
Organisations undertaking or intending to undertake activities relating to organic waste treatment must take note of the Notice and ensure that the necessary actions are taking to ensure compliance.
