NATIONAL FORESTS ACT, 84 OF 1998: DECLARATION OF FOUR TREE SPECIES AS PROTECTED AND THE PUBLICATION OF THE ANNUAL LIST OF ALL TREE SPECIES WHICH ARE PROTECTED UNDER SECTION 12 OF THE ACT
Notice Title: National Forests Act, 84 of 1998 (“NFA”): Declaration of Four Tree Species as protected and the publication of the Annual List of all Tree Species which are protected under Section 12 of the NFA
Government Notice: GN 1935 in GG 46094 on 25 March 2022
Commencing date: 25 March 2022.
The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (“the Minister”), under sections 12(1)(d) and 13(3) of the NFA declared the following four tree species as protected:
- Berchemia zeyheri (Red or Pink Ivory)
- Diospyros mespiliformis (Jackal Berry)
- Schinziophyton rautanenii (Manketti)
- Umtiza listeriana (Umtiza)
In addition, the Minister under section 15(3) of the NFA, published the annual list of all tree species, which are protected under section 12 of the NFA.
How to ensure compliance at my operations?
Employers must take note of the new protected status of those identified tree species and assess whether there are any such protected trees on their premises so that the necessary actions may be taken to protect those trees.
