WORLD RAINFOREST DAY 2023
The theme for World Rainforest Day on 22 June 2023 is “Preserving the lungs of the earth”.
Rainforests play a crucial role in producing a significant amount of the world’s oxygen and help mitigate climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide.
Significance of World Rainforest Day:
- Rainforests serve as biodiversity hotspots.
Rainforests are home to endemic plant and animal species. By protecting rainforests, we protect these biodiversity hotspots.
- Climate Regulation.
Rainforests play a crucial role in regulating the Earth’s climate. They act as carbon sinks, absorbing large amounts of carbon dioxide and helping to mitigate global warming.
- Indigenous Cultures.
Rainforests are inhabited by numerous indigenous communities who have lived in harmony with nature for generations. Preserving rainforests also means preserving their unique cultures and traditional knowledge.
How to celebrate World Rainforest Day 2023:
- Educate yourself;
- Spread awareness; and
- Live sustainably. Support sustainable agriculture and forestry practices, choose products made from responsibly sourced materials, and reduce your consumption of products contributing to deforestation.
- Support Rainforest Conservation Organisations.
