MINE HEALTH AND SAFETY ACT 29 OF 1996: GUIDELINE FOR THE COMPILATION OF A MANDATORY CODE OF PRACTICE FOR AN OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH PROGRAMME ON THERMAL STRESS

Notice Title: Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of1996 (“MHSA”): Guideline for the Compilation of a Mandatory Code of Practice (“MCOP”) for an Occupational Health Programme on Thermal Stress

Commencing date: Effective from 1 May 2022

The Chief Inspector of Mines in terms of section 49(6) of the MHSA, issued the reviewed guideline for the compilation of a mandatory code of practice for an occupational health programme for thermal stress.

Changes relates amongst other to the following:

  • Realignment of the format and content of the MCOP;
  • Inclusion of additional Annexures for example mandatory codes list, mandatory occupational hygiene thermal stress reporting forms etc.
  • More detailed information in respect of medical surveillance related to thermal stress

How to ensure compliance at my operations?

Mines must review their existing MCOP relating to thermal stress to align with the updated Guideline before the 1st of May 2022.
